It’s all well and good that the monies we raise go into a scholarship fund, but as long as the money sits in a bank account, it’s not doing anyone any good. That’s why last year’s Santa Crawl was so special to us. The funds that we raised were enough to send the Boland Fund over it’s clip level to actually start handing out money.
Last spring the College of Communications named the first recipient of the Boland Internship Award. That first recipient was Brendan Zipfel (pictured above), a 22 year old Telecommunications major from Harleysville, PA. The grant went to help him defray his expenses during his internship with WTAJ this past summer. Typically, the students intern over the summer, so the grants are made late in the spring semester. The second recipient will be honored this coming spring (and we’ll keep you up to date here on the site). So now we know the money is out there doing some good and not sitting in a bank account.
Since Brendan is of legal drinking age, we have reached out to him and invited him to join us on the Crawl. Brendan has told us that, barring any last minute conflicts, he will try to make it. We look forward to meeting him and, since he’s a poor college student, buying him a beer.
NOTE: I thought, for about a minute, of getting a different picture of Brendan, since this one, coupled with the post title, makes it look like the money went to tailgating. Then I remembered that the Santa Crawl is all about having fun, and if the picture, coupled with the title, brings a smile to someone’s face, so be it. There are limits to how far we need take political correctness.
